Groudon is described in mythology as the Pokemon that raised lands and expanded continents. According to legend, a titanic battle between Groudon and Kyogre (the primary force of the ocean world) created the oceans and the land, and the two were sealed beneath their respective elements.

The name Groudon originates from the words "ground" and "don", meaning 'lord'. Thus, Groudon's name means 'Ground lord', a fitting title for the strongest of all Ground-type Pokémon. It has the power to scatter rain clouds and make water evaporate with light and heat, when it is brought into battle, the weather becomes sunny. It came as a savior to people who had been suffering from terrible floods.
